Afterimages and Sensation

چکیده
According to purists, visual experience can be exhaustively characterised in terms of a subject’s apparent perspective on external, public reality. Visual experience presents us (or if we are subject to illusion, apparently presents us) with aspects of the world beyond us—nothing more, nothing less. According to sensationalists, we cannot adequately characterise experience solely in terms of a subject’s apparent perspective on external, public reality. In addition, or instead, we must appeal to visual sensation, in some sense of that vexed term. 2 Afterimages have long formed a core part of the sensationalist’s critique of purism. Afterimages, so the argument goes, are manifestly different in character to ordinary perceptual experiences of the publicly visible world. As a result, they cannot be accounted for solely in terms of the ways in which apparent aspects of that world are presented to us. Instead, they must be characterised in terms of visual sensation. Critics of visual sensation have failed to provide an adequate response to the objection from afterimages. Even Ryle, who famously declares visual sensation to be a myth—the product of misguided philosophicalcum-psychological theories which ‘trade on, and pervert’ our ordinary understanding of sensation as bodily feeling (1949: 243)—confesses to a

Measuring palinopsia: Characteristics of a persevering visual sensation from cerebral pathology
Palinopsia is an abnormal perseverative visual phenomenon, whose relation to normal afterimages is unknown. We measured palinoptic positive visual afterimages in a patient with a cerebral lesion. Positive afterimages were confined to the left inferior quadrant, which allowed a comparison between afterimages in the intact and the affected part of his visual field. Results showed that negative af...
متن کاملThe glare effect does not give rise to a longer-lasting afterimage.
The glare effect is an illusion in which a region appears self-luminous when flanked by gradients that decrease in luminance with distance from the region (Zavagno, 1999 Perception 28 835-838). This region also appears brighter than a surface of the same luminance. We investigated, using the paradigm of afterimages, whether a low-level mechanism at the level of the retina or LGN could account f...
متن کاملSex differences in visual persistence: experiments on the Ganzfeld and afterimages.
Sex differences were investigated in two experiments on visual persistence: the Ganzfeld and the afterimage. Males were found to hold visual sensation longer than females, particularly in the Ganzfeld where there was little overlap of scores. Variability of experience in the Ganzfeld was also greater for males and they commonly reported 'blank-out' effects while females did not. There was furth...
متن کاملInteractions between simultaneous contrast and coloured afterimages.
Coloured afterimages were obtained after fixation of a neutral grey spot on a coloured surround The colour of the spot afterimage was similar to that of the previous surrounding area. and was found to have two components which could be elicited independently. Firstly. complementary afterimages were generated by the subjective contrast colour which was induced into the grey spot during the adapt...
متن کاملAfterimage of perceptually filled-in surface.
An afterimage induced by prior adaptation to a visual stimulus is believed to be due to bleaching of photochemical pigments or neural adaptation in the retina. We report a type of afterimage that appears to require cortical adaptation. Fixating a neon-color spreading configuration led not only to negative afterimages corresponding to the inducers (local afterimages), but also to one correspondi...
